Higher Education in the UK - Managing Change
for BUFDG (British Universities Finance Directors Group) at Solent Conference Centre Southampton
18 March 2008
Richard Scase gave the Closing Keynote Speech to a packed audience of delegates at the Solent Conference Centre. He described the changing role of higher education in a re-mixed global economy. He outlined some of the major demographic trends that are likely to impact upon UK universities and particularly the ways in which changes in the country’s demographic profile will put added demands on universities. He said that most universities are still too ‘pale, male, and stale’ to respond to many of these, especially in an internet age when students have choice of access to knowledge and information. Paradoxically, this was putting a greater emphasis on the need for high quality face-to-face tuition and universities will need to focus on imaginative approaches to this if they are to have world-class brand and attract the most talented men and women-and of whatever age.
